Charcoal Workshop

I recently ran a charcoal workshop inspired by landscape. Above is a finished piece of mine and below is the students work.

This is a layering approach to charcoal, building up in order to erase to depict the light.

It is a dirty process but the charcoal has a lovely, tactile velvety quality that excites the senses.

The students worked from photos mainly but encouraged to experiment and go with the medium to see what it is capable of and find their own relationship with it.

There was white conte pastel added and some scratching back to achieve even greater contrast and varied mark making.

An all round success and looking forward to running again in the near future.
