Images emerging

I am doing some drawings in charcoal that come to a natural finish and I am completely happy with the unfinished nature of them (even the cats paw prints). These are things that add narrative and is not a sketch towards a larger finished work but an end in itself.

This one is from one of Frank Hurley’s photographs from Shackletons 1914 expedition. He  was the official photographer on Sir Ernest Shackleton‘s Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition which set out in 1914 and was marooned until August 1916.

His photographs are both technically brilliant and a a huge testament to the tenacity of spirit that enabled them to survive. My drawings are a celebration of this and an attempt to understand the resourses needed to get through such an ordeal.
