I have recently been taken on by Nunnington Galleries. As well as a series of meet the artist weekends […]

Picture in situ

Into the Mist This was purchased by a class member. I enjoyed working on the softness of the mist. It takes a little work with acrylics, using extender medium to give extra flow and working time. Acrylics often seems to lack the capacity for subtlety but it is possible if you work at it.

York Open Studios

I had a very successful York Open Studios. The footfall was pretty low but those that did come there were plenty who were looking to buy/collect my work. It is a tiring two weekends at the end of a lot of preparation but it was good to not be absolutely shattered. It is also a […]

Sky Landscape Artist of the Year

Phil Reynolds on Sky Landscape Artist of the Year

Back in June last year I competed in a heat of Sky Landscape Artist of the Year that was filmed in Knaresboro. I had wrote a post about it but seems to have deleted itself from my blog. Here is my second draft. It was an interesting and challenging experience. Looking back on it now […]

Stillingfleet Lodge Gardens workshop

Another successful outdoor session at Stillingfleet Lodge Gardens at the end of May. The weather was fair and it is a stunning place to enjoy an en plein air painting day. The planting, peace and atmosphere is lovely and we get the place to ourselves for the day. This workshop is about mixing the simple elements […]

Ellergill 2016

This was the fourth trip to the bunk barn in Littondale in the Yorkshire Dales and it was a resounding success. So much so that the majority of the people who went this year have signed up for next year. We had great weather, a bit breezy on Saturday but with that we got some lovely […]

Soft Toys using Gouache paints

Around the end of May we did about three weeks working with gouache paints. These are known as poster paints and can be described as watercolour with body. They are opaque and have a soft chalky finish. They are particularly good for graphic work are highly controllable when used without too much water. I asked […]

Ellergill 2015

Another great weekend in Littondale in the Yorkshire Dales. We were forecast heavy rain but hardly had a drop. Great company, laughs and of course painting. It is a lovely remote location perfect for our artistic needs. Below is one of my pieces of work.

In the garden using a viewfinder

We continued trying to employ the viewfinder. It is a bit of an extra thing to deal with and it is not something I use very much but that does not mean it is not useful. When faced with a lot of information to try and edit you are able to focus a little more […]

Coloured objects

Following on from last weeks filling the space exercise, this week we did the same thing but this time used coloured objects and painted the compositions in gouache. I asked people to bring in a few objects of a certain type of colour eg blue objects or green ones. The objects will be varying hues […]

Edges

This week I set the brief to look at the edges of objects. By this I meant not only one edge but what you could see outside the edge also. We had touched on this sort of thing before but this time there was no need to feel compelled to draw a whole object. There […]

Inside/outside project

WE did a 5 week project entitled Inside/ Outside. This was one I did on part time foundation in 1992. Here are a selection of students work from this task. Jon looked at a sheep’s skull and worked in various media and formats. Barbara produced a most exquisite book where the words had left the […]

Battersea Affordable Art Fair

I recently had work in the Affordable Art Fair with the Bridgegate Gallery. I took a trip to London to see the show and how the paintings looked in this setting.  It was a very rewarding experience and sold the bottom two pieces of work. I am pleased with my first showing in the capital […]

Light Touch

The past two weeks the class have been tackling a still life made up of glasses, apples , onions set on some white materials. The cloth had plenty of folds and the still life was set on two levels (boxes underneath the objects). The idea was to create accurate drawings and spend time making the […]
